Fallbrook A Leer marked its 20th annual day of literacy and service with resounding success on Saturday, July 27. The event, held at Maie Ellis Elementary School, featured Manuel H. Bernal, President of the Cesar Chavez Foundation, as the keynote speaker.

The celebration honored the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez, highlighting his contributions to immigrant workers and their families. Students who excelled in poetry and essay contests were recognized, and a fortunate family received a donated computer and printer, amplifying the spirit of community and learning.

The event saw participation from countless families receiving free school backpacks filled with books and supplies. Parents attended educational presentations, and over 20 guest readers engaged the young audience with captivating stories. The day was vibrant with children’s artwork, dance and ballet folklorico performances, a magic of science event, craft activities for preschoolers, food, drinks, and more.

Reflecting on the event’s impact, Seth Trench, Director of Communications at FUESD, stated, “We are incredibly proud to partner with Fallbrook A Leer in fostering a love for reading and learning in our community. The turnout and enthusiasm from both the families and the volunteers have been overwhelming. It’s inspiring to see the dedication of everyone involved in making this event a success.”

Dozens of local teens volunteered, gaining valuable community service hours required for graduation, further embedding the ethos of service and community involvement in the youth.

Manuel H. Bernal, whose extensive career in community development and leadership with the Cesar Chavez Foundation, brought a wealth of knowledge and inspiration to the event. Bernal’s commitment to housing and economic development, coupled with his academic background in economics, provided a compelling keynote that resonated with attendees.
